Come take a look around:
From the doorsteps, there are footpaths to Muncaster Fell and Castle in the West (Ruskin named the view from Muncaster’s gardens across the fells beyond as the ‘Gateway to Paradise’) or Irton Fell and the neighbouring Wasdale Valley to the North. Why not seek out the source of that whistle and take a ride home on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Steam Railway. Ravenglass itself is a historic port, dating back to Roman times. Many of its Roman artefacts remain to this day including one of the best preserved Roman bathhouses in the north.
Nature lovers will love the nearby Japanese gardens, first developed in the 1920s and currently under a project of restoration from the Forestry Commission and local volunteers. From traditional Oriental humpback bridges to sunken pools and bamboo, your imagination will be captured by this incredible attraction.
For local libation head to the 17th century Bower House Inn, while at the other end of the village the King George IV awaits your patronage. A quick drive to neighbouring Gosforth and you will discover Italian restaurant, The Wild Olive and several locally run tearooms along the way.
