Volcano is the dream home for both walkers, nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts and those looking for something utterly unique and bursting with quirky character.

The Carroll-Cumbrian connection relates to the former ownership of Holmrook Hall by the Rev Charles Skeffington Lutwidge, whose relation, Lewis Carroll came to visit, travelling over the fells via Great Gable. The Victorian country house was later requisitioned during the second world war, serving as a top-secret training site for the Special Boat Service, under the title HMS Volcano.

With so much history packaged into its 180-years, Volcano certainly lives up to its promise, a charismatic converted coach house, set against a woodland backdrop with a mature garden.

Sense your pressure powering down as the main road turns off into a short trail leading to a large courtyard off the beaten track and home to a small community of homes making up the former Holmrook Hall.

Park up, before making your way to the entrance of the handsome former coach house to Holmrook Hall, where a hinged stable door provides a homely welcome within the revealed red brickwork.

Step into the kitchen and immediately sense the heritage, history and warmth of Volcano, where high eight-foot ceilings lend themselves to a feeling of openness above the original cobbles underfoot, once the authentic troughs and horse bay dividers of the coach house. Together, these elements serve up an elixir of calm, soothing the senses instantly.

Running from front to rear, light suffuses the space from both sides, amplified by the creamy white walls, ceiling and cabinetry. Within the units, there is plentiful storage for all the culinary essentials: Volcano is currently successful, well-equipped holiday let.

An electric combination Range cooker, fuelled by propane gas, is set within the units, with a Belfast sink inset within the extra wide, raised-height worktops and plumbing for a dishwasher or washing machine.

A contemporary twist on the traditional farmhouse kitchen; enjoy the best of both worlds in this pretty yet practical room. Versatile in its layout, there is space for a long farmhouse table in here, or in the sitting room, accessed through sliding doors for an open, easy flow.

Plenty of space for sofas beneath a ceiling sprinkled with spotlights, snuggle up in front of the multifuel stove and watch twilight settle over the garden framed through the original floor-to-ceiling window arches which include a French door opening out to the patio beyond.

Floor to ceiling doors create 'movable walls' providing a perfect circular flow around the ground floor. Returning to the staircase ascend to the bright, open first-floor landing.

Turn right, and step through to the first guest bedroom, peacefully set overlooking the rear garden. A comfortable double bedroom with plenty of storage space in the built-in cupboards, soak up the views over the garden and through the trees.

Opposite, step onto the broad limestone tiles of the bathroom, where a contemporary roll top bathtub is surmounted by a rainfall shower before a wall of sage green splashback tiling. Feel the farmhouse vibe in the wide wash basin, inset within a large vanity unit (ideal for stashing your flotsam and jetsam). A hidden cistern toilet completes the furnishings.

Heading towards the front of Volcano, arrive at a large landing area, cleverly opened up to provide space for a study area and additional daybed. Discover secret floor to ceiling storage across the width of the internal wall, and beneath the bottom stair treads. The phone signal at Volcano has been dramatically following an upgrade to the phone masts servicing the area, with the area being upgraded to superfast broadband.

Tucked to the left off the landing is the blue bedroom, dressed in midnight tones and perfect for a cocooning night's sleep for adults and children alike. As well as an additional guest bedroom, why not consider this room as a second home study, in addition to the landing area?

Take a further set of stairs up through the rabbit hole into the 'Alice Bedroom', a light filled, magical master spanning the width of the home.

Soak up the sense of open space, as the whole footprint of the home reveals itself. So private and spacious, there is room for a seating and library area and even plumbing and a Velux window ready for the addition of an ensuite should you wish.

Wake up to views down onto the garden, woodland and beyond; depending on the season you can see as far as Scafell. Within the eaves discover ample twin storage for clothes, suitcases, shoes and accessories. Bedroom bliss with a fairy story feel.

Returning downstairs, step outside onto the patio terrace, perfect for alfresco dining and relaxing in the sunshine. Long and wide, the garden is full of secret areas for children to explore and enjoy. Mature hedgerows, lawns and a water well, renowned for its mineral properties reputed to stimulate growth in garden plants, all add to the charm and personality of Volcano.

Those wishing to try their hand at the Good Life are in luck, a piggery can be used for just this purpose, although currently serving as a vegetable garden basking in the midday sun. On the hardstanding at the end of the back garden there is space for chickens, and also the outlines of a dog run which also serves as a chicken coop. Or why not consider setting the piggery as a utility room, running power and water from the house to be a self-contained traditional wash house facility?

Volcano also counts a stable block amongst its outbuilding offerings, and with a fairly large footprint could be perfect to convert into a self-contained annex, with small kitchenette,
living room and bedroom.

Surrounding the garden is woodland where deer roam freely, river and fields that stretch on, crisscrossed with footpaths. To the front, sit back as the sun sets over the Irish sea, glimpsed through the trees beyond the walled garden.
