Which are the best-selling homes in the Dales?

Think of the Yorkshire Dales and you’ll imagine rolling hills with stone walls, rushing waterways, quaint pubs and pretty shops. No wonder nearly 4 million people visit the area every year.

Since we opened AshdownJones the Dales, we’ve sold some truly unique homes, from stone-built cottages, to barn conversions, and farmhouses to country estates. Most of these sales have been to local buyers, unlike the homes we sell in the Lakes, which tend to be bought by people from outside the area.

But which Dales homes are the most popular and have sold for the highest prices in recent years?

The most expensive home sold since 2018 was The Old Rectory, which sold in 2021 at £4.6 million, followed by Grassington Hall, selling for £1.8 million in 2018. Both these homes are important period country homes, stone-built, with large gardens and land.

In total, 41 Yorkshire Dales homes have sold for £1 million and over in the last five years, most of which fall into three categories:

1. Country estates: large period homes with impressive architecture and sprawling gardens

2. Farmhouses: renovated and modernised, often with long-reaching countryside views.

3. Barn conversions with unique character, spacious layouts, and beautiful rural surroundings.

So what are buyers looking for right now in the Dales?

In short, the best of both worlds! Country homes with period features in rural locations, BUT with superfast broadband, power shower and all mod cons!

And it’s definitely possible, with the right budget.

For example, our beautiful Accerhill Hall in Giggleswick:

Depending on when you’re reading this article, here’s the Rightmove link:

Dating back to the 1600s but with superfast wifi and electric car charging point, Accerhill Hall really does tick every box! And just look at those views ???? And then there’s Swawbeck, a Grade II listed former farmhouse just ripe for renovation. A blank canvas (as we estate agents love to say) so an enthusiastic and energetic family can come in and make it their own. We especially love the pretty cottage garden, and the teenage-friendly attic space.  It may have gone by the time you check this link but here it is on Rightmove:
